mobelform doc sofabed

A SOFABED THAT DOES DOUBLE DUTY, Mobelform’s Doc folds out into not one, but two twin sized beds stacked one atop the other: in short, a bunk bed. Included are the necessary mattresses as well as a ladder and short rail to prevent mid-night tumbles. Note that the rail only guards one side, so Doc (and its larger, more expensive cousin, Doc XL) is best positioned with its back to the wall.

mountain coat range

IT’S A LITTLE WARM FOR COATS in the northern hemisphere but Brave Space Design’s Mountain Coat Range is gorgeous enough for us to consider buying one simple for its aesthetic value. The edgy piece is actually a two-parter; using excess material from cut sheets, the walnut exterior wraps around a lighter maple interior that has been sliced at an angle to resemble snowy mountain peaks. Each “range” comes with four peaks for hanging, and can be connected if more space is necessary.

eos studio’s porcelain creations

IT’S HARD TO PICK JUST ONEEOS Studio takes porcelain and greatly expands its traditional tableware setting, applying it in the form of inlays. Even more conservative pieces such as cups and vases are often twisted and coated with their signature ink splatter pattern, for an artistic, sometimes unseemly appearance that mesmerizes as your senses tell you that sensible porcelain shouldn’t gyrate like that. EOS often mixes wood and steel to further accentuate the porcelain; the overall effect not just a frivolous use of ceramics but a carefully implemented work of art.

nesting tables by pryor & williams

77 OF ANYTHING seems to be a lot; in the case of Pryor & William’s STRATUM Nest, this represents the number of laminations involved. We especially appreciate the fact that the tables are composed of individual pieces of hand-blackened aluminum alloy, which are in turn beautifully tied together with an ultrasuede inlay. The overall appearance is one that resembles wood grain at first glance but upon closer inspection reveals a lustrous iridescent shine. This makes these nesting tables a veritable work of art; as such, they are limited to 30 signed pieces and are as collectible as they are functional.

opus incertum

ALTHOUGH CHAOS AND ORGANIZATION seem at loggerheads with each other, Sean Yoo’s Opus Incertum manages to corral both of these seemingly contradictory traits together. The rectangular polypropylene design is functional an versatile, as it can be stacked and is outdoor friendly. The inside shelving entertains our more entropic tendencies, with the appearance of an irregular beehive; unlike most shelves, Opus seems more at peace empty than full.

sit ‘n read bench by peter van riet

I CAN’T QUITE GET MY HEAD wrapped around Peter Van Riet’s Sit ‘n Read, although I do admire his creative approach to cushioning. The bench itself is straightforward enough: simple and rectangular with a hollow interior for storage; in other words, a floor shelf. Instead of laying down a flat cushion, Peter has instead opted to create zig-zag seats that can be placed in a variety of positions on and around the bench. Whether these are stable enough is questionable, but it does lend itself towards informal/casual seating arrangements.

creep collection

WHERE HAVE ALL THE CUTOUTS GONE? The answer seems to be Susan Bradley’s Creep collection of side tables and shelves; laser-cut patterns on powder coated steel are nothing new, but Susan adds decorative pieces that seem to complement the cutouts. These flower and leaf-shaped pieces spill out of the furniture and onto adjoining walls and floors for a beautifully wild and organic effect. Available in black or white.

FOR PARENTS, SPOILING is often as much about the child as the parent. The Argington Fundy Play Table allows modernist parents to simultaneously nurture and dispense with cringe-inducing plastic rotoformed furniture without feeling guilty; features include slow-closing safety hinges, non-toxic finishes and JPMA certification and dry erase or chalkboard tops. And, most importantly: it looks pretty darned good.

deckhopper

July 9 9:00 am

POISED LIKE AN ATHLETE, Mathias Claerhout’s Deckhopper appears ready to spring into action with its sleek, streamlined design. The Deckhopper even maintains the flexibility of an acrobat as it can be folded completely flat and hung on the wall when not in use. Its stainless steel and polyamid construction give it a distinctly industrial flavor, perhaps slightly too much so; a full-length felt cushion is in order for any serious napping.

still

July 9 8:30 am

PERHAPS NOT THE MOST PRACTICAL in terms of available space, Olav Slingerland’s Still series is nevertheless quite unique; its fluid interior constantly appears to be on the edge of escaping. Half chance and half planned, Olav “freezes” the clay just as it is ready to overflow; we’d venture “Spill” might be the name for failed versions. Still is available in three versions: two vases and a small dish.

energy saving adapters by gilles belley

GREEN BEHAVIOR BECOMES QUITE PALATABLE with Gilles Billey’s Energy Saving Adapters; these units use an innovative visual indicator that illuminates according to the amount of power wasted by a device while in standby mode. The user can then choose to completely shut off the device, or wait three minutes at which point it is disabled automatically. It’s definitely a designer’s power trip owning these adapters, as they also act to organize your wires, thereby reducing unsightly cable clutter.
