Dear PadStyle Readers,

I am pleased to announce that I have found a new owner for PadStyle. His name is Nuno Andrade, and after many conversations with him I believe he is the one to continue PadStyle’s legacy as a quality decor inspiration blog.

Nuno is no stranger to the world of modern and contemporary decor, and actually is co-owner of Prime Furniture Source, a modern furniture store. He has expressed a sincere interest in continuing to provide quality content to PadStyle readers, and with Nuno’s own knowledge of the industry he will be able to provide more depth as well as breadth to this blog.

I therefore am proud to hand PadStyle’s mantle over to Nuno, and hope that you will welcome him with open arms.

Sincerely,
Si Lee
Outgoing Executive Editor, PadStyle

conventio wing chairs

WITH A FEW NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS office chairs tend to follow fairly tried and true formulas for design, since ergonomics necessarily rank first in importance. Ergonomics and design aren’t completely incompatible however, as evidenced by HAG’s Conventio Wing chairs. While the bifold crease is largely for looks, the ventilated polypropylene shell definitely helps to keep things cool and comfy. Available in stacking as well as more traditional wheeled versions, these chairs are also 100% recyclable.

solas lighting

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GLOW: Cj O’Neill’s Solas Lighting seems to hover in mid-air with special acrylic brackets that offset them slightly from the wall. Graphics such as flying birds, swirling dots and arrows are all applied to give a sense of movement, while simultaneously adding further contrast to the light emanating within. Although carried internationally, Solas Lighting is available in the US at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas.

tufty time sofa

July 24 9:15 am

TUFTS GENERALLY ACT as an innocuous backdrop for more grandiose design elements, but not so with Tufty Time. Designed by Patricia Urquiola, this seating collection of traditional sofas, corner sofas and islands is consumed by tufting to the point that they seem to be composed of discrete cubes. Even the seatbacks and arms are an exercise in geometric blocks, stacked and arranged according to rows and columns. This deference to straight-laced coordinate axes ironically serves as a catalyst for modular creativity, as pieces can be freely joined to each other like building blocks.

loope loopita

IT’S JUST SCREAMING FOR A HOTWHEEL, but loope is intended mainly for oh-so-practical adult sensibilities. Made from red oak, a single loope offers seating for two that is not quite intimate yet not quite exposed; high density foam padding keeps tushes comfy. Conceptually several variations have been explored with modularity in mind; we personally would have killed for an endlessly looping tunnel if we were still in grade school.

mobelform doc sofabed

July 19 10:15 am

A SOFABED THAT DOES DOUBLE DUTY, Mobelform’s Doc folds out into not one, but two twin sized beds stacked one atop the other: in short, a bunk bed. Included are the necessary mattresses as well as a ladder and short rail to prevent mid-night tumbles. Note that the rail only guards one side, so Doc (and its larger, more expensive cousin, Doc XL) is best positioned with its back to the wall.

mountain coat range

July 19 9:15 am

IT’S A LITTLE WARM FOR COATS in the northern hemisphere but Brave Space Design’s Mountain Coat Range is gorgeous enough for us to consider buying one simple for its aesthetic value. The edgy piece is actually a two-parter; using excess material from cut sheets, the walnut exterior wraps around a lighter maple interior that has been sliced at an angle to resemble snowy mountain peaks. Each “range” comes with four peaks for hanging, and can be connected if more space is necessary.

eos studio’s porcelain creations

IT’S HARD TO PICK JUST ONEEOS Studio takes porcelain and greatly expands its traditional tableware setting, applying it in the form of inlays. Even more conservative pieces such as cups and vases are often twisted and coated with their signature ink splatter pattern, for an artistic, sometimes unseemly appearance that mesmerizes as your senses tell you that sensible porcelain shouldn’t gyrate like that. EOS often mixes wood and steel to further accentuate the porcelain; the overall effect not just a frivolous use of ceramics but a carefully implemented work of art.

nesting tables by pryor & williams

77 OF ANYTHING seems to be a lot; in the case of Pryor & William’s STRATUM Nest, this represents the number of laminations involved. We especially appreciate the fact that the tables are composed of individual pieces of hand-blackened aluminum alloy, which are in turn beautifully tied together with an ultrasuede inlay. The overall appearance is one that resembles wood grain at first glance but upon closer inspection reveals a lustrous iridescent shine. This makes these nesting tables a veritable work of art; as such, they are limited to 30 signed pieces and are as collectible as they are functional.

opus incertum

July 16 9:15 am

ALTHOUGH CHAOS AND ORGANIZATION seem at loggerheads with each other, Sean Yoo’s Opus Incertum manages to corral both of these seemingly contradictory traits together. The rectangular polypropylene design is functional an versatile, as it can be stacked and is outdoor friendly. The inside shelving entertains our more entropic tendencies, with the appearance of an irregular beehive; unlike most shelves, Opus seems more at peace empty than full.

OPEN FLOOR PLANS are as valuable as gold; far from acting as Qi-disrupting barriers, Italy-based Rimadesio’s sleek sliding doors are designed specifically to preserve and enhance open, integrated spaces. Rimadesio has recently found its way into the US via a standalone showroom in Boston, bringing with it luxury features such as overhead rails, acoustic-insulating magnetic systems, aluminum construction and acid-etched glass. Extra brownie points: both residential and commercial clients are welcome.
