“Tobi” 3-Piece Seating Collection in Neotenic Style with Japanese Influence

The 3 piece living room series “Tobi” by designer Elena Trevisan, is a collection of new furniture with bold colors and a neotenic influence. The collection is produced by Rexite, an italian furniture design brand launched in late 1960s.

The back shape of the Tobi series features a tubular, curved shape that seamlessly blends into the armrests of the design. The oval stitching front-facing the armrests are unique to the series. The design is inspired by the stepping stones of a Japanese garden, called “tobishi” in Japan.

The stepping stones are the ceremonial pathway for guests arrival before a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Accentuated compared to the more minimalist features of the collection. Colors for the collection are notable brick reds and light blues in different fabric choices.

The frame is made of solid wood, the covers are removable with your choice of wool, velvet, leather and eco-leather. The four-legged base is made of lacquered coated wood.

The fluidity of the entire design, including the cylindrical form of the legs seemingly “float,” and the oval shaped armrests note the series’ tobishi inspiration. The chunky and playful look speaks to the neotenic influence, a design movement growing in popularity from modern households to artistic furniture exhibitions.
