3D Printed Urban Furniture Using Recycled Plastic in Amsterdam
A new project called “Print Your City!” by design studio The New Raw uses 3D printing as a way to clean up cities while creating something practical for its citizens by recycling plastic and turning them into a furniture pieces.
The first furnishing created in this project is called the “XXX Bench.” This innovative and eco-friendly creation seats 2 to 4 people and takes the form of a double sided rocker.
The design of the bench requires users to find their equilibrium together by balancing each others weight while seated. It also requires everyone seated to utilize their energy to be able to rock each other back and forth.
The furniture is made of recycled plastic pellets taken from ground up municipal plastic waste and processed in a large scale pellet extrusion 3D printer. The constant stream of plastic waste material and the process itself is a short material cycle where 3D printed 100% recyclable furniture can be produced quickly and efficiently. The bench can be easily customized in shape and form, even able to be inscribed with logos and messages.
The XXX Benches will be displayed throughout the city of Amsterdam not only as resting places for citizens eager to take a seat but also as a statement to demonstrate the waste produced by contemporary cities.
