Miniature Mid-Century Modern Interior Design & Famous Classics ONLY smaller
Miniatures are a time honored craft. We aren’t talking your favorite Barbie furniture either! In fact, there are entire museums and art societies around the globe dedicated to this form of creation. Miniatures can vary in subject, but many traditional miniatures are made to look like the real life-size object, only smaller.
Standard size is 1:12, which is 1-inch equals 1-foot. However, miniaturists and diorama makers venture into different proportions, usually going smaller or slightly larger to create their miniature replicas. If they are doing intricate, high-level replicas, many miniaturists will make their objects from the same materials as the original, real-life version. For example, the photo of the miniature iconic Noguchi Table featured below is made from walnut wood and glass, like the real one created in 1944. It is also featured next to a miniature version of the famous lounge chair and ottoman designed by Charles Eames during the 1950s.
For some, miniatures are all about creating life-like replicas of households and furnishings from different eras. Other miniaturists prefer taking the more imaginative approach, incorporating fantastical characters and visionary themes. Of course, we love both!
Some of our favorite miniature replicas and small-scale dioramas are tiny reproductions of mid-century modern classics and retro 1950s – 1970s household interior design motifs. Below are some of our favorites from mid-century modern miniaturists:
While making miniatures might not be your craft, it does take time, skills, a steady hand and a keen eye for detail to create tiny replicas of mid-century modern favorites. We think they are absolutely adorable! And don’t worry, miniatures make it easier to break it to people when they notice you have a doll house sitting in your living room!
