The amazing crystal salt sculptures designed by Israeli artist, sigalit landau, encrusts everyday objects in salt by emerging them into the hypersaline body of water that is the Dead Sea.
The sculptures are like a nostalgic science experiment with an artistic twist. Landau has monitored the items placed below the surface of the water for over 15 years to see how the different shapes, materials and objects form the salt crystals over top of them.
Her artwork showcases the alchemical nature of salt, in that it can be both “death bearing and life sustaining” in its properties and the effect it has on objects both inside and outside of the dead sea which it was rebore from after its emergence.
Objects such as ballerina dresses and shoes are placed under the surface, items that played a personal role in her physical memories.
Landau hopes to engage others in the importance of the Dead Sea in future creative projects and scientific endeavors and has written a novel entitled ‘Salt Years,’ showcasing her saline sculptures and experiments as well as artistic process and personal perspective on the transformative properties of working with the Dead Sea.
