The sublime awe that we feel when we look at the sun setting or rising on the horizon can be incorporated into our everyday experiences with a little interior design know-how. Golden edged blues, deep purples, incandescent yellows and oranges all can be used to recreate the natural feeling of a sunrise or sunset. It’s not just about colors, either: you can use different textures to throw some reflections across your room, to add that uncanny glow. Nothing can compare to waking up to a real sunrise or sitting with your significant other watching a sunset, but this feeling can be incorporated into your home if you work with the colors and textures found in nature.

Trend Spotlight: Textured Fabrics

November 25 4:49 pm

The recent developments in interior design show a love of fabric – but not in the ways we’re used to. In the past, modern design used fabric as an accent color or pattern. Adding some animal stripe throws or rich burgundy pillows seemed the natural way to incorporate fabric into otherwise leather- and chrome- heavy rooms. However, now we are seeing a resurgence of fabric for the love of fabric. Using a variety of fabrics to enhance the textures in your room is a great way to stay ahead of the design curve. Off-beat fabrics such as burlap and floral sheer linen can be just the accents you need for success.

Reclaiming discarded items and showing them in a new light is a great trend in eco-friendly interior design products, and Deckstool does this with a flourish. Perfect for a college dorm, a trendy loft, or an edgy commercial venture, these stools bring a re-fab, bright, colorful aura to any room. Rather than throwing away that old skateboard, you can send it off to Deckstool and they’ll reconfigure it for you into a compact, versatile, and sturdy seat or surface that you can incorporate into any wild design you can dream up.

Designer Spotlight: Adam Rowe Design

Simply stating that the old meets the new in Adam Rowe Design’s work is not going deep enough. The innovative use of classic design and modern material, of using basic building blocks to create one-of-a-kind works of art, is something that this designer does with apparent ease. His ethos is to “fully develop what a material can do” by bending, stretching, carving, and otherwise experimenting with the forms that he produces. The above pictured victorian chair combines cheap composite wood with high-grade leather in order to challenge the misconceptions of material value, as well as to create a beautiful new take on a favorite design, a common theme in his work.

Trend Spotlight: Make a Statement

November 19 4:26 pm

Your home should say something about you, not about what the current trends in interior design are. Of course, you can use these for inspiration and for new ways of looking at space, color and objects, but you should always keep in mind that you’ll be the one living in your home. Look at each of your rooms and ask yourself: does this say what I want it to say? Does this reflect me? If your kitchen has a relaxed mood and your bedroom has a busy mood, that’s great – if that’s what you want to express. Do some internal searching to make sure that the statement your home is making is the one you most want it to make, not the one that you think a designer would want it to make.

Industrial sturdiness and delicate organic design meet in the products at The Other Edge Design Studio. The Jasmine Table in particular, pictured above, is a work of fusion art that would look great in any loft, home, or edgy business. The design is inspired by artisans from Japan, and works to “mark the transition from the sacred to the public world” by being placed in a walkway. The other designs, such as the high-end MetropoliCan office waste bin and the Hidalgo Chair and Ottoman, at The Other Edge are just as innovative, having won multiple awards and being showcased in prestigious interior design shows.

Designer Spotlight: RB Object

November 17 9:47 pm

RB Object is a fledgling design firm that has only one product line to its name, but the concept is so refreshingly simple that it looks like they’ll go far with it. The Collect 01 Table/Cabinet/Stool is a piece that is designed to explore the relationship between person and object. It is inspired by 17th and 18th century “cabinets of wonder”, but with the modern ethos of functionality as well. It can be a side table, a stool, and a cabinet, depending on your needs. The inlaid glass tabletop sits high above the base, connected by a maple cylinder, with enough space between to hold books, display curios, or simply to represent the space that it encompasses.

Trend Spotlight: Cheery Citrus

November 16 9:42 pm

Add some light to your home with the vibrant tones in the citrus family. Anything from sunlight yellow to blood orange will pack a punch as either an accent in a more neutral room or the more prominent theme in a livingroom or bedroom. It is very easy to go overboard with citrus, so it’s best to periodically step back and make sure the brightness isn’t too blinding. But you can create an atmosphere that is warm, fun, and welcoming with a splash here and there of this latest color trend in interior designing, without overpowering the senses.
