Alternative Living: Bug Repellent

Summer is here and so are those pesky mosquitoes and ticks. Did you know that there are a lot of at home recipes perfect and other alternatives for the repellent of those critters without the need of unwanted chemical additives from your common store bought deet repellent.  In insects, deet disrupts the enzyme cholinesterase, which stops the messages from the brain being sent to the muscles. Scientists have deemed that the use of deet products may cause a similar disruption in the overall Enzyme processes in mammals as well.
Fortunately, alternatives to deet bug repellent are abundant! A rising trend in Europe and Australia is the use of picaridin. Picaridin is a synthetic compound derived from plants that are used to make black pepper. Although there is no evidence leading to illness of prolonged used, in studies, 60% of picaridin applied to the skin was absorbed through the pores.
Other, more natural remedies for insect repellent include a mixture of essential oils including, eucalyptus, lemongrass, citronella, tea tree, rosemary and peppermint. Mix these essential oils with a ½ cup apple cider vinegar and ½ cup witch hazel to create your own spray repellent.
Take steps towards overall betterment of health by introducing natural remedies in all aspects of life.
