What is Boucle Fabric?

Besides being extra luxurious when made out of fully-upholstered furnishings, it is a fabric woven or knitted with boucle yarns.  Boucle yarns are made from a number of different loops, if you do any sort of handmade crocheting, looping is a type of weave pattern. Some boucle fabrics feature large circlets, others feature tiny curls. When two strands or more are combined, “the weaver must keep tension on one strand, with the other strand kept untaught as it is plied. From there, the loose strand should form new loops, allowing the second strand to act as an anchor.”

The actual process to create boucle yarn is meticulous and skillful. The length of time it takes for a completed creation can be time consuming as well. Once it is complete, it is unmistakably boucle fabric and there’s nothing else like it.

What is Boucle Fabric Used For?

You can often find boucle fabric combined with a variety of different fabrics. Boucle yarn is specifically used in elegant and high-end accenting, detailing and trim on sofas, lounge chairs, and dining chairs. It can create dimension, texture, and a touch of sophistication to any design.

Boucle fabric is fairly common and it can be used to create a multi-layered fabric that will most definitely give a furnishing more texture and details.

Why Do We Love it?

Boucle fabric is a unique type of intricately woven yarn, primarily used as accent fabric. However, it can be paired with other types of fabrics for fully-upholstered furniture. For an entire piece to be done in this durable and comfortable fabric, it might be common but it never loses its truly luxurious appeal for furniture and design buffs. It became popular decades ago and has slowly drifted away from the fully-upholstered design scene. If you find a boucle fabric upholstered furnishing nowadays, best to grab it before it gets off the market again for another decade!

We hope this helps extend your knowledge on all the ins-and-outs of boucle fabric!
