Mid-Century Modern “Reflection Cabins” in Québec, Canada

A pair of mid-century modern cabins called “Reflection” cabins in the woods of Québec, Canada bring retreat to a whole new meaning. Architects from Bourgeois / Lechasseur have been coming up with new contemporary structures turning homes into works of art. The two cabins are identical in shape, similar to the size and rectangular shape of a classic ranch house design. They were built in an mountainous area near a popular tourist destination. Although the mountains are breathtaking to view, the reflection cabins were methodically chosen to be surrounded by the forest landscape. Visitors can embrace an inward-looking sanctuary with a visual representation of this conception in the exterior mirrored walls of the cabins.

An unpaved road leads up to the cabins surrounded by a myriad of favorited hiking trails. The cabins are placed about 164 feet apart from each other to ensure guest privacy and more seclusion. One cabin faces towards the east, while the other cabin faces towards the west. The cabins are not entirely glazed with external mirrors. Only one wall is mirrored, the other surrounding exterior walls are constructed of dark wooden slats. Both styles of facade pay homage to the forest landscape.

The cabin entrances are untraditional. They are not placed in the front, but they are placed on the side of each cabin. Inside of the cabin, the layout is distinctly mid-century modern in style. In fact, the reflection cabins exterior is also similar to many classic mid-century modern homes. Large glass paneled walls, flat roofs and open floor plans. The cabins interiors are naturally furnished with reproductions by legendary mid-century modern designers. Although visitors within the walls of the cabin can see into the great outdoors, they can’t be seen within. The openness and minimalist architecture can accommodate up to 6 guests. There is a living room, dining area, fireplace, 2 private bedrooms and 1 large bathroom. The mostly wall-less interior communal areas can be used as additional sleeping quarters for those who choose to stay at a reflection cabin with more people.

We love seeing new variations on mid-century modern style throughout the world. The Reflection Cabins in Quebec bring new insight into the peace and serenity achieved through immersion with nature.
