American hip-hop artist, Kanye West, is making waves again in popular culture. This time around it’s in the form of affordable housing. As per usual with Kanye West, his plans have a very specific style in mind.
Following his presidential candidacy announcement over social media last week, he is infiltrating the sustainable housing scene with a project called “YZY SHLTRS” by YEEZY HOME.
Kanye West continues to surprise the public with his bold, and oftentimes, outlandish statements, ideas and projects. This project follows the trend in community affordable housing. His dome-shaped dwellings are designed to mimic the rugged yet futuristic structures seen in the classic sci-fi film series, Star Wars.
Construction started in July 2019 but it was soon to be demolished by August because it did not adhere to building codes and several surrounding neighbors supposedly protested to the LA County Department of Public Works.
Nearly a year later, the project has started again as shown on Kanye West’s twitter account. The image posted showcased the new houses in their early stages of development.
Forbes interviewed Kanye West about the new affordable housing project. According to West, YZY SHLTRS is “inspired by Luke Skywalker’s childhood home, (and that he) has been working with a team to design prefabricated structures that sport the same austere aesthetic, with the goal of deploying them as low-income housing units.”
This isn’t the first time housing projects, progressive communities and various designers have looked to the popular Star Wars film series for inspiration.
Known Arizona-based artistic community, Arcosanti, created an “urban laboratory” inspired by Tatooine, a metropolis built on a desert terrain with a futuristic-rustic appearance from the film. Development began in the 1970s and even after the original architects death, continues to remain active and expand with the help of volunteers.
This style of architecture has been referred to as futuristic-rustic or simply “futurustic.” Combining futuristic with rustic style. Innovative techniques intertwined with a rural, natural aesthetic. The upcoming YZY SHLTERS resemble a similar futurustic style with sustainable design and affordability being at the forefront of the project.
After the latest news about Kanye West’s “mental illness,” we can’t be sure if the housing project is a farce or not. Especially considering the many far-fetched and outlandish statements he’s made over social media and to news sources. But as of now, we are still curious to see more housing projects in a “futurustic” style popping up for the creation of more affordable housing.
