CUBA OF YESTERYEAR is the chief inspiration for the Santiago seating collection, available at GREENCulture. Made from plantation-sourced Acacia hardwood, the collection boasts bold, angular lines and rounded corners for a chic, art-deco inspired style. We particularly like the cream-colored cotton fabric, which features a herringbone texture and contrasts well with the hand-finished frame.

MOST LAPTOPS are little exothermic bundles of pain and belong anywhere but the lap, which is why Harald Hynell’s Lap Tray is a godsend. The design is a two piece affair; a stylish wooden frame sits atop a cushion that can conform to the contours of your body for maximum comfort and stability. Available in natural willow, black, white or wenge, we do wonder just how effectively the tray minimizes heat transfer; at the very least, the raised lip around the top also allows it to serve breakfast in bed.

SIMPLE AND SCULPTURAL, the Drake Coffee Table is an ideal minimalist piece; the star of the show is the slightly inset wooden top, veneered in either rich Macassar or striped Zebrano. The straightforward stainless steel base gives the table an exposed architectural feel and also minimizes the visual weight of the piece. Available at Gus Design, the Drake pairs well with the Bishop Table and Pawn Stool.

OKAPI STUDIO’S Shelf Concept clearly takes full advantage of its plastic polymer construction, molding shapes that are both practical and trendy. Four shapes are available and can be stacked for a multitude of configurations; our favorite is definitely the zig-zag bookshelf, which can also double as a mini filing cabinet. okapistudio.com

ALTHOUGH LITTLE MORE THAN ROUNDED SQUARES, Julian Chichester’s Rene Collection keeps things simple to great effect. Each piece is wrapped in faux leather; the coffee and console tables are particularly effective. Also available: the nightstand and cabinet both feature aged metal hardware and tapered legs for an added Art Deco flourish.

DYNAMIC INDIVIDUALS will love the flexibility of Bruehl’s Sunrise seating. Each piece features three “rest elements” which can be adjusted to form everything from impromptu tabletops to inclined seatbacks. Elements can even be removed for additional space–daybed, anyone? In essence, Sunrise can go from fun to functional (and back) in the flick of a wrist.

SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE, West Elm’s Wood Deck tiles are the outdoor equivalent of indoor Flor tiles (previously featured here). Even better: these pieces require no assembly and can simply laid flat for quick and stylish wood decking. Our only point of contention is the exotic nyatoh wood; we just hope it’s plantation sourced.

MORE HOLLYWOOD THAN HOME, the Fortuny Lamp (1907) looks more appropriate on a movie set or photography studio with its massive 33″ reflector. Those who love their furniture bold and flashy will definitely appreciate this piece, as its industrially-inspired lines and 8 foot height make it impossible to miss. Although solid black or beige shades are standard, we definitely prefer the more trendy ornamental shades which remind us of Tord Boontje’s frenetic work here.
