A FUSION OF BOTH HEMISPHERES, the Koshi lighting collection is designed by Italy’s Manuel Vivian and recalls the style of traditional Japanese lanterns. Each square-shaped piece lampshade is created from bars of wenge-finished bamboo; alternating gaps allow light from its blown glass stain diffuser to flow through. The glint of chrome-plated fittings balance the warm, earthy light with the look of cold steel; in all, the effect beautiful and mysterious, like a rising sun forever captured behind window shades.

WHILE CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN, Shirtscape may very well make the clothes with its organic-meets-futuristic design. Although just a concept at present, Shirtscape appears to be comprised of metal segments (likely aluminum) that are formed into the shape of a hairpin loop. Asymmetrically staggered slots hold at least eight hangers which make each garment visible from the side.

JONATHAN NESCI’S stylish JACK stool debuts this Saturday at ICFF (booth 1969) and we can’t wait to get our hands (and tushes) on one. Each chair is water-jet cut from 1/4″ aluminum, press-broken to shape and then powder coated; Bauhaus enthusiasts may recognize the color scheme, inspired by Josef Alber’s “Homage to the Square“. JACK is available in custom RAL colors and has a lead time of 6-8 weeks, with Jonathan designing and managing the production of each piece.

Handmade by a Rhode Island artist, each piece is one-of-a-kind and is comprised of a folded five-sided aluminum disc. The high contrast subway graphics are inherently sharp and eye-catching by design; these trays are therefore not only ideal for serving but also make awesome wall decor.

ELEGANTLY MODERN, we love Zanotta’s Barocco seating collection for its restrained employment of traditional aesthetics. Chief amongst these are the rounded and flared armrests and the diamond quilted upholstery, which act as a subtle contrast to the predominantly minimalist design. Quality is evident within and without: the easy-to-clean removable external covers and elastic strip springing are nice touches.

NOT SURE where to sit? You’re not alone–Copa’s “It’s a Junction” intentionally confusing design shifts the focus from seat to the sitters. The unconventional x-shaped arrangement is deeply interactive, as it forces individuals to pause and contemplate their usage of the seat. The photos from Salone Satellite 2007 (above) are whimsical but also telling, as they are a reflection of each occupant’s own definitions of personal space, intimacy and comfort.

BOLD CONCEPT ART comes to life with Knu’s eco-conscious line of desks. The bowed-out curves are reminiscent of cartoons with a dash of contemporary design, while the Allen wrench-only assembly is childlike in its simplicity. Made from FSC-certified birch substrate and available in six GREEN veneers, these pieces are not only light and durable but environmentally friendly; sustainability and quality are clearly the primary tenets of Knu’s design philosophy.

MATH GOES SEXY with the Mamma Rocking Chair, whose voluptuous surface is based on Fibonacci numbers. Designed for a mom-to-be, its curves are also comfortable but definitely not humble: this beaut is efficiently constructed from a single piece of fiber glass and sports a glossy urethane finish.

POKING HOLES in furniture sounds wrong, but the Drip series by The Swedes makes a compelling argument. Both the shoe shelf and hat rack variants are straightforward, rectangular designs that are for all purposes unremarkable save their densely perforated lacquered steel surfaces. In addition to being ornamental, this also allows for the free-flow of water in outdoor environments.

LIKE A NAUTILUS SHELL the Lyaeus Chair surrounds the user in a cocoon-like embrace; this amounts to more of a self-enclosed room than a seat. Bentwood slats are spaced to allow limited sunlight to filter through the carapace while maintaining privacy. The earth-toned design is reflective of Lyaeus’ intended usage: as an outdoor chair ideally situated by swank poolsides or on posh rooftop lounges.
