AGK Mercury Lounge Chair

WHO COULD HAVE GUESSED THAT ANDRE AGASSI and Steffi Graf's first creation would have been a wire-frame lounge chair that seems to float on air. Teamed with renowned modern furniture designer Mike Kreiss, Agassi and Graf's creation is part of a 16-piece custom collection created for their Las Vegas home. A combination of Graf's preference for "streamlined design" and Agassi's inclination towards subtle elegance, the AGK Mercury Lounge Chair is made of weather resistant powder-coated steel wire hand-wrapped in dark brown synthetic rattan.  (I personally would have bet that the first creation of these two tennis icons would have had a better backhand, but this will have to do for now.)

Yin Yang Outdoor Dual Lounger

December 29 3:09 pm

NO LONGER JUST AN ANCIENT CHINESE PHILOSOPHY, the Yin Yang outdoor lounger, manufactured by DEDON, combines two opposite forms into one beautifully simple article of furniture. Alternatingly convex and concave, in both bronze- and platinum-colored fibers, it was created to appear as if formed by the natural elements, much like water-worn stones or wind-shaped sand dunes on the beach side.  Made of 4,000 meters (more than 13,123 feet, or over 36 football fields) of fiber, the Yin Yang lounger can be separated into two distinct and equally attractive pieces.

gisele armchair

IT’S NO ACCIDENT that Gisele sounds a bit like “gazelle”; this handcrafted Brazilian armchair has graceful, swept back lines that resemble both the form and movement of its antelope counterpart. We particularly like the natural cotton rope back, which is both elastic yet retains its shape and allows for ventilation. Made from a small factory in Brazil, Gisele is made from sustainably harvested hardwood with an eco-friendly water-based finish.

on the edge pots

AN ASTUTE READER raises a good point about the drainage on Michael Hilgers’ On The Edge Pots: you probably don’t want to be the poor sap on the floor below come watering time. That obvious issue aside, these polyethylene pots bring a little green to sparse urban balconies while making efficient use of oft-limited space. Each is separated into two compartments; sensible, the innermost one could be used for actual plants while the outer weighted with colorful rocks for balance.

aotearoa (indoor/outdoor) living

July 12 8:10 am

NATURE’S ELEGANCE very rarely finds its way into outdoor furniture, an imbalance that David Trubridge’s Aotearoa Living collection successfully corrects. Most of the tables are fairly straightforward, with New Zealand beech over stainless steel. We are however particularly impressed by the Dondola recliner and dining chairs; organically inspired, but still restrained, these pieces strike a beautiful balance between modernist demands and natural aesthetics. Although stylish enough for indoor use, Aotearoa is finished with fungal resistant oils for durability.

gloster eclipse collection

July 11 8:45 am

ABOUT AS SWANK as any indoor bed, Gloster’s Eclipse collection is designed as a vastly superior alternative to the average lawnchair. However, we feel that its inherent modularity allows it to be much more–in many ways, Eclipse can essentially act as an entire extra room with all the benefits of outdoor living. We definitely recommend the stylish canvas, which in addition to upping the swank-factor also adds shade and a bit of privacy.

nest chair

FROM A DISTANCE Tord Boontje’s Nest chairs are your not-so-typical collection of modern roto-molded pastel colored chairs; each has a tulip-like shape with holes on the side for gripping and water drainage. Up close, these polyethylene chairs reveal an entirely new level of detailed beauty that is classic Tord, with crisscrossing floral patterns that span the entire outer surface. The photos convey a fairly petite chair, but in reality they measure a healthy 25 inches across and stand nearly about 2 1/2 feet high; not for larger occupants but adequate for nearly anyone who can fit into an average task chair.

frame modular seating system

July 4 12:59 pm

DISPENSING WITH ALL THE FLUFF, Francesco Rota’s Frame system is an exercise in do-it-yourself minimalism; the love seats, armchairs and other pieces were designed with modularity in mind. Frame’s frame is crafted from strips of aluminum that are first upholstered and then joined together, which is an unusual step but also accounts for its regularly ribbed appearance. Transparent polycarbonate feet protect the seats from scuffing; choose from either rope upholstery or Lenti’s exclusive AquaTech yarn.

IF THE SUPER RICH CAMPED they’d probably bring along Gandia Blasco’s Elevada; all they’d require is a personal entourage to move the 7 foot cube. Its minimalist aluminum frame and adjustable canvas shades are more likely to be seen poolside at a chic celebrity estate; the quick drying foam cushions are removable for easy cleaning. At nearly $7.5k this bed is well within the range of most hyper affluent types who need to get their snooze on both inside and out.

maia outdoor collection

June 21 12:29 pm

WICKER’S TIGHT WEAVE is reinterpreted in aluminum with the Maia outdoor collection, although this pattern is considerably looser and almost web-like in appearance. Each seat is designed with a cradle-like design, with edges that gently fold up to partially embrace the occupant; this also gives it a wide stance, especially in the case of the Relax armchair. Polyester powder-coated aluminum forms the basic frame, while hand-woven synthetic fiber is responsible for the actual weave. Even the cushions are reinterpreted: they’re made out of thermo-melted textile for easy maintenance.

lars zech stools

June 19 12:51 pm

THERE’S A BIT OF DALI in these twisted stools by Lars Zech; that art is his primary calling is evident, as he prefers to be called a sculptor. Each stool has its own personality; some seem to sway with the wind, while others splay their legs out in seeming defiance. Zech’s choice of wood (oak, burnt oak and burnt ash) as a substrate is ideal, as the torturous passage of time is evident not only in its external contortions but the very grain of the wood itself; an oil treated finish allows the stools to remain in their natural outdoor environment.

palm coast collection

June 19 12:41 pm

GONE ARE THE DAYS of wicker and aluminum-only paradises in the backyard; the Palm Coast collection effectively uses rotomolded polyethylene to create outdoor pieces with the solid presence of indoor furniture. Each piece is sleekly curved yet also somewhat chunky; think modern style which is meant to last: UV inhibitors, acrylic upholstery and stainless steel fastenings all help to resist the elements. The Palm Collection is also modular; lounge chairs, ottomans, and even lighted armrests make a wide degree of customization possible.
