MARKING UP YOUR FURNITURE still seems a travesty for some but here at PadStyle we can’t get enough of it; Uhuru’s Sakura Table is embellished with shiny zinc floral and plant patterns that are hand-cut and applied. A wide range of finishes are available, including walnut, reconstituted macassar and white ash. Customers can also choose from colored lacquer–we’re talking bright colors that include blue, orange and light green.

DISPENSING WITH ALL THE FLUFF, Francesco Rota’s Frame system is an exercise in do-it-yourself minimalism; the love seats, armchairs and other pieces were designed with modularity in mind. Frame’s frame is crafted from strips of aluminum that are first upholstered and then joined together, which is an unusual step but also accounts for its regularly ribbed appearance. Transparent polycarbonate feet protect the seats from scuffing; choose from either rope upholstery or Lenti’s exclusive AquaTech yarn.

THE ORGANIC MODERNISM MOVEMENT from the middle of last century literally gave birth to Eero Saarinen’s classic Womb Chair, created primarily as an ideal place to curl up with a good book. The reinforced fiberglass shell folds up around the back and the sides to encompass the occupant, and can be wrapped in semi-aniline dyed leather, wool/nylon fabric or Mohair cotton. Ideal for mid-century enthusiasts or anyone who appreciates good, functional furniture.

MOBELFORM PROBABLY WASN’T AWARE of the serpentine undertones of the Ercolina chaise lounge, but when paired with Adam’s Temptation the association seems almost divine. On one hand you have the homely Adam, essentially a bean bag wrapped with contrasting stripes and alternating vertical seams, so named because it resembles an apple. The more feminine Ercolina is tempered by an innate tension, as its tightly coiled shape can be stood on end and resembles a snake ready to strike; biblical reenactors would be proud.

FAR TAMER THAN ITS NAME IMPLIES, the Diva Chair’s single most flashy feature is a two-toned color scheme, which by itself is stylish but certainly not ostentatious. The colors neatly separate the “sitting area” from the “frame area”; the contrasting edges on either end are actually meant to be armrests, with a harder surface ideal for serving as a mini end table. Although the legs are swank stainless steel, the innards of Diva are considerably less showy: good old solid hardwood.

CLASSIC AND METROPOLITAN, the Rue de Seine collection is ideal for those who crave a contemporary look yet desire a softer alternative to harsh, modern lines. Bultex foam padding with feathers over springs makes for comfortable seating, with a choice of oak or aluminum feet (we prefer the former for a more country chic look). A limited edition of 60 pieces is currently available until August 31st and is wrapped in swank (and hard to find) Optika fabrics.

ELEGANT BUT SUBTLE TOUCHES ABOUND on Pelika Design’s Plano, although a cursory glance only reveal a minimalist but otherwise unremarkable table. The top itself is ultra-thin and seems to float over the base; available in laminate, veneer or glass, we definitely prefer the wood look as it contrasts well with the aluminum legs. Speaking of which–each cylindrical leg can be mounted and removed without tools, making this nearly Ikea-like in its simplicity.

WE’LL BE THE FIRST TO ADMIT that the Kashan Sofa isn’t exactly the most comfortable; minus the pillows you’re more likely to get an indentation in your back than a comfortable sitting experience. If you do manage to adequately outfit seat the Kashan becomes significantly more appealing with its minimalist, low to the ground design and high walled construction. The seatback also can double as an impromptu shelf, though we’d advise against leaving anything there long term.

FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES Legno-Legno is essentially an incomplete hardwood floor, but its rug-like implementation is what truly makes it unique. Made from 4 cm of oiled oak interspersed with 0.5 cm strips of flexible black polyurethane, it differs from regular wood flooring in that it can be rolled up like a carpet. Winner of the 2006 Red Dot Award, Legno-Legno is part of RUCKSTUHL’s Stripes collection.

SHAVING OFF A LEG seems an unsettling decision at first, but Ross Dider’s Obelisk chairs actually make quite a bit of sense. Still, the slanted design continues to play tricks with my mind, especially when viewed from the side: I can’t help but feel I’d slide right off. Standard fabrics and leathers sit over a sleek chrome frame, which is available in armchair and sofa sizes.
