IS IT ART, IS IT LIGHTING, OR IS IT BOTH?  When money is no object, choosing this object to illuminate your modern décor is a must.  Light is shielded by the leaf construction of this lighting piece, which is both beautiful in design and unique in appearance.  Light casts down, creating a glare free atmosphere conducive to elegant dining, luminescent entryways, and breathtaking great room ambiance.  Designer Poul Henningsen created this lighting source in four different finishes, copper, brushed, lacquered, and stainless steel. Treat yourself to luxury when designing a modern, contemporary interior design scheme.  This pendant light piece is available through Ylighting.com for $7,312.00

“glow” chandelier

January 20 4:38 pm

A CHANDELIER YOU ASK? WHERE ARE THE CRYSTALS?  Chandeliers aren't what one normally thinks of when considering lighting for a modern home.  Usually the calling card of palacial estates or ornately decorated mansions, the chandelier had received a modern upgrade with Palluco's brass "Glow" Chandelier, designed by Enrico Fanzoline and Vincente Garcia Jimenez.  With an encased light surrounded by brass casing reminiscent of origami, the "Glow" Chandelier appears to be suspended within a circle of light.  Available in red, white, black and burnished brass, this unique design is also available in a floor model.

lights up table lamps

July 17 8:15 am

SUBTLE AND MOD DON’T USUALLY GO TOGETHER, but Lights Up’s columnar table lamps manage to bring both words without rending the space-time continuum. Patterns such as faux bois (wood), kimono and snowflakes are printed onto silk shades; unlike most lamps the shades are all-or-nothing affairs and dominate the entire lamp. A brushed nickel base rounds out each lamp; strict minimalists can also purchase all white or natural linen shades.

lola chandelier

CLOTHED IN BLACK AND LINED WITH JEWELS the Lola Chandelier looks like a questionable lady of the night, but we can’t deny its obvious sex appeal. The jewels are actually Swarovski crystals; seductively glimmering within a quartet of powder-coated carapaces, they are only visible from certain angles. The shell itself can also be clad in stainless steel; this option is a little less sensual but attractive nevertheless.

loop lamp

BESIDES BEING FREAKIN’ SEXY the Loop Light is also efficient; its hollow frame presents a low visibility LED lamp that simultaneously stays lit and out of the way. At present still a prototype under development by Norwegian group Trokk16, Loop already possesses a surprising degree of finesse with a beautiful mirror polished surface to further streamline its profile. Future enhancements such as the ability to tilt will only increase the appeal of this ultra minimalist piece.

hi-light by donna brady

GRAFFITI AS CONSUMER ART seems an odd combination but it actually works quite well with Donna Brady’s unique Hi-Light pendants, made from photos of her Brooklyn neighborhood. The names are appropriately urban (take a walk down Kent Street) and the textures unforgettably so: rusted metal walls and pitted concrete surfaces over smooth cylindrical shades make for gritty-meets-swank decor. There’s a raw, untamed beauty to graffiti in general–let’s hope these help to draw awareness to urban blight as much as they capitalize on it.

moso pendant

LIKE MINI SKYSCRAPERS (or stacks of dna electrophoresis, depending on whom you ask), the Moso Pendant is an elegant piece whose vertical grain veneer naturally invites the eye to scan along its height. An eco-friendly piece with a bamboo frame, bamboo veneer and finished with low V.O.C. oils, designer Brian Schmitt (he brought us yesterday’s Mobiles) even purchases renewable energy credits (a nice alternative to carbon emissions trading) to offset the electricity used to construct each lamp. Not quite available yet as production is slated to begin sometime this summer.

julianna holowka lamps

ALTHOUGH POLYSTYRENE is best known for its other incarnations, namely Styrofoam, Julianna Holowka has successfully molded its laminated form into an array of wildly creative lamps. Her Josephine Lamp most appeals to feminine sensibilities, with a gentle petal motif rendered in white linen laminated polystyrene, while Chaos resembles twists of cardstock but is too made from plastic. For those with more violent inclinations (I kid), the Mace Lamp has the twin virtues of being both eye-catching and useful in gladiatorial combat.

spun light

June 25 8:53 am

LIKE TWO ASYMPTOTES the Spun Light approaches convergence with a design that a mathematician would love. Sebastian Wrong’s 2003 piece is inspired by fluid dynamics and made from aluminum. Available in black, white, brown or silver, the lamp is topped with a cylindrical shade that sounds bulky at first but whose curves beautifully complement the buttery smooth aesthetic of the lamp base. Choose from two table lamp sizes and one floor lamp.
