Live Edge Design has a motto: “Reclaimed. Refined. Remarkable.” And it holds many degrees of truth.

The furniture you’ll find at Living Edge Design is not your typical sleek and stylish modern fare – but it is definitely stylish in its own right.

Living Edge Design features wood au natural at the center of its pieces. And it doesn’t just buy its wood at the local hardwood store: it takes an eco-friend stance towards its materials, and only uses wood that is reclaimed from trees that have been knocked over during a storm, or left by forest and construction companies.

The wood is then refined using an innovative process. It is turned into slabs, dried, and detailed before being finished with detailed sanding and glazing at their Vancouver studio.

You’ll get that West Coast vibe with any piece from Live Edge Design. Their pieces are designed to last generations, featuring solid construction and natural feel.

And as an added bonus, you can ask to receive a “story book” that outlines the life and journey of your very own tree. This can be set on the table, and it will act as a great conversation piece for you and your guests.

Living Edge Design focuses on large, stunning dining room tables and countertops that could be located in the heart of your dining room or brought to your home-away-from-home luxury cabin. Although their furniture is quite expensive, it is worth it for the small carbon footprint and the stunning natural, simple beauty that their products exhibit.

October 25 2:02 pm

cheungvogl is a creative partnership of two abstract thinkers in the architecture and design world. Judy Cheung hails from Hong Kong and has experience designing world-class buildings internationally. Her partner, Christoph Vogl, is from Cologne, Germany, and also has design and architectural experience that traverses many countries. Together, the two founded Cheung Vogl in 2008.

The pair believes in harmony found through the ambiguity of art and memory. What is truly a memory? Can memory be artful? And when does art blend seamlessly into our memories? These are the questions that drive these creative minds to build architectural wonders.

Their style is spare and airy. They have designed a variety of landscape and architectural structures, including an outdoor ecosystem known as Senjuku Gardens in Japan that is currently under construction. Utilizing space as part of the creative process, the designer duo has create something beautifully natural amidst a sea of skyscrapers and concrete.

They have also designed a space-conscious house in New York that asks the question: “how do you inject NY into NY?” It focuses on secondary spaces – rooftops, gardens, balconies – and creates a new way of seeing space in a bustling, active city.

The above pictured Umarmung chair updates the traditional idea of sitting on the floor in Japan, creating a soft pocket around someone resting on the ground.

The design team behind cheungvogl is a talented pair, and one to watch in the future of cutting-edge architectural innovation.

Designer Spotlight: Clifford Furniture

October 12 8:08 pm

Clifford Furnitureis a youthful designer who isn’t afraid to experiment. He started in design by working with wood at the young age of 15, and hasn’t looked back since. With a relatively small number of designs under his belt, Clifford still has to prove himself – but his beginnings are definitely promising.

Check out the Conversation Seating above. There is nothing better than having an in-depth conversation that piques your interest and stimulates your mind, and Clifford pounces on this idea with gusto. The two chairs are joined near the base, facing each other, at a comfortable distance for either couples or strangers to make eye contact and have a deep discussion.

The image below shows Clifford’s Rocket Table. It features a retro-modern design that is a bit space-agey – hence the name Rocket Table. We love its mix of wood and glass, and the texture in the stripes that circle around the base. This would look wonderful paired with a low platform white leather sofa.

Clifford’s designs use simple lines and show a willingness to experiment with material and style. He is still finding his footing as a designer, and we look forward to seeing what he has in store for us in the future.

VerdeMalaquita doesn’t want to be called a “design studio”. Instead, they want to offer a more holistic approach to design than is traditionally found in a design studio, doing everything from the graphic sketches to the finished production. They are all about the message that a piece conveys, and they maintain this throughout the design process. They also have a green approach to furniture creation, publishing an eco-magazine for their clients. The above pictured Conducta represents VerdeMalaquita’s attempt to tame light and make it flow through tubing as if it were air. This stunning piece is organic and creative, and represents VerdeMaliquita’s approach to artistic creation.

Aleman/Moore is a compilation between two men, specializing in beautiful, modern woven carpets. Their work takes its inspiration from big-brimmed straw hats, evolving to lose the hat and keep the brim. Described as “works of art for the floor”, their straw carpets are ultra unique and ultra chic. In addition to straw carpets for the modern home, Aleman/Moore creates custom-made straw baskets, totems and wall hangings. The above two images show the side tables that Aleman/Moore has created, inspired by their original straw carpets. They feature an ethnic vibe, liberal use of color, and the embrace of the natural straw textures that defines this team’s work.

Rene Siebum works to combine the way we experience the world around us with form, space and design. He attempts to bring out the emotion that design can evoke, and infuse it into refined materials. Siebum has an eye for maintaining function while exploring the edges of form, which helps him come up with unique designs like the Second Skin closet pictured above. It is both a closet and a living space, as well as an eye-catching piece of design. He bases this closest space on ancient Japanese architecture which is open and flexible, transforming a space based on its use and the mood of the participant.

August 6 9:43 pm

Nucleo is the brainchild of its chief designer, Piergiorgio Robino. He began working with open source software to create his design projects, eventually connecting to other designers who spoke his language. All of them work on unique projects, but collaborate when they need creative inspiration. The team has entered a number of award shows, exhibitions, and several members have traveled to educational institutions as guest lectures. The above pictured Resin Fossil Table is a new project from Nucleo. It features an internally glowing core that glows through the Tetris-like, blocky structure. Its random, rigid form speaks to the modern minimalism popular in contemporary design.

Elli Popp is all about design – shapes, patterns, textures. She creates wallpaper and accessories for the modern home, but only for the daring. Each pattern follows a unifying theme while drawing on neo-romantic influences and vibrant colors. Her nearly retro designs are cute, funky and individually tailored to meet the needs of each client. Dror Bren is a young designer, and isn’t afraid to use his personal history as a child growing up in the ’80s and ’90s to influence his design. He studied industrial design in Israel, spending one semester abroad in the U.S. to gain an international perspective. He uses unique materials to bring out what is unique to his design. Design duo No-Zero believes that design affects all aspects of a person’s life, and good design can enhance their experiences. Their pieces are meant to redefine the relationship between people, space, and furniture. The founder of No-Zero, Ron Poon, sees simplicity as a tool to bring out the inner beauty of an object, but not necessarily the only tool for the job. The above pictured Serving Table features a combination of simple design and functionality. It offers half of its surface up as a modular serving tray for food and drink. The solid oak construction and dark and light contrast is a refreshing modern statement.
